Procurement Policy

"Environmentally responsible or 'green' procurement is the selection of products and services that minimize environmental impacts. It requires a company or organization to carry out an assessment of the environmental consequences of a product at all the various stages of its lifecycle. This means considering the costs of securing raw materials, and manufacturing, transporting, storing, handling, using and disposing of the product." 1 Green procurement would involve such things as purchasing products made by workers in fair and equitable working conditions, products from materials that are either recycled, or come from a sustainable source, such as paper from a certified sustainable forest. For York University it would also mean considering giving preference to purchasing local or bioregional materials for its operations. This option would ensure the University would help to support the local economy and cut down on transportation costs. One benefit of this includes the reduction of environmental pollution that further travel entails.
